I have for years had nothing but mediocre and cheap sunglasses, far too cheap to pay that extra dime for something I will almost certainly scratch up within a week, but lately, I have been longing for sunglasses that don’t squeeze my head painfully or leave ugly marks in the bridge of my nose. Another problem is the fact that I have to wear uncomfortable contact lenses anytime I want to wear sunglasses. For those with vision plans in their health insurance, I’ve heard you can purchase sun glasses from your optometrist. Now, all I have to do is look up what kind of insurance plan cover eye wear.

In my search for the perfect pair, that I’m willing to pay for and will wear for at least a couple years, I’ve come across a couple different styles I like and being as I live far from anywhere to buy them in person, I have to depend on reviews and a company’s reputations to know whether or not they’ll be comfortable. As much as I don’t like the idea of that, my research has brought me to a couple different brands I would have no problem picking from online.

One of the most original styles I found was from Lumete Eyewear, a company started by2 entrepreneurial women Claire and Barbera. Clara Herrera, Lumete’s Designer and Creative Director, was born and raised in Colombia. She moved to New York City to attend The New School, where she received a multidisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master’s in Media Studies. Barbara Warren, Lumete’s CEO, received a business degree from Texas A&M University and a law degree from Fordham University in New York. Lumete was born out of Clara’s lifelong obsession with eyewear and Barbara’s longtime entrepreneurial dreams.
Two educated, strong women, who I trust with my eyes sounded like a good place to start my search and tons of their styles really caught my eye.

The style of the sunglasses is very classic and classy, with a huge variety of frame colors and variations to fit anyone’s taste, including Dita Von Teese!

Check out some of their sunglasses here: Lumete.com

My other option was some sunglasses similar to the ones I currently own, but.. better. I really like my black heart shaped glasses that I bought for $5 on the street in NYC. They might be about the cheapest frame and lens glasses I’ve ever owned, but they are a style I’ve wanted since I was a kid. I decided to look into better quality options since you most often see heart shaped glasses for little kids , and I found very few. The only one of higher quality by Moschino went almost immediately out of stock while I was deciding. So, I still have the option of some basic “better than $5″ heart shaped glasses, but I’m worried about how they will fit, being that they might give me migraines the second I put them on.

My second option, the last pair of Moschino black or white heart shaped sunglasses, OR These LINDA FARROW – JEREMY SCOTT HEART SHAPED SUNGLASSES

I have some high expectations for sunglasses this year, the first of many I hope, as I raise my standards for sunglasses higher, maybe my quality of enjoyment of wearing them will improve and therefore my summer days themselves.

It’s still hard to tell what the sunglasses trend will be for summer, we all have different tastes and styles that go best with different kinds of sunglasses but so far it looks like Large lenses is still on top, plastic frames and shape? well it is yet to be proven that one particular shape dominates the others right now. What is your favorite sunglasses shape and why?

Lots of sources keep saying that this year’s thing is Neon and whether it is because we were told so, or because it is, neon has been showing up everywhere, in stores, on the streets and I’m totally cool with that. Ever since I can remember I’ve loved neon and although many people associate it with the 80s, why? It’s a 2012 thing now, the 80s can’t have it anymore, and with the designs coming out in neon, most of them nothing like 80s style in shape or style. Yellow is one of my favorite trending colors right now, a rare, bright color, making its scene on the spring streets of the northern hemisphere.

A much awaited designer for us, The Hellers, has emerged with their new collection and brand new website!
We featured The Hellers over a year ago in a post about using Holga Cameras for fashion photos, their style and appeal was huge and people wanted to know where to buy their beautiful pieces. Well, the time has come and The Hellers new SS2012 collection is live and as beautiful as ever imagined.

Their collection features flowing pieces, original patterns and innovative and modern designs throughout, while also employing a touch of strangeness, their most endearing feature.

Designed and produced in Tel Aviv, Israel, The Hellers offers a worldly and timeless collection or pieces. Abandoning the restrictions of “seasonal” fashion, their pieces are meant to span all seasons and be worn with reckless abandon for the socially constructed timelines designed by the fashion industry. I have great respect for any company that isn’t out to sell you a new piece every 3 months but rather creates pieces that will last you a lifetime, be appropriate for any time or place, and make you look awesome at the same time.

Launched in 2008, The Hellers is comprised of siblings Dania and Yoram Heller, who are based out of Tel Aviv and Los Angeles.

This new collection featured Kimono inspired pieces, silks, digital (almost 3d) patterns, metallics (my favorite), crop tops and bustiers, comfortable and flattering parachuting pants, and beautifully cut dresses. The whole collection is a dream.

Thrifting is an art, plain and simple. Sometimes you’re born with an eye for potential and sometimes you have to learn by example or, in my case experience. I’ve bought plenty an acid wash jackets or high waisted jeans from the 80s, somehow thinking I had scored some amazing “cut rate comeback fashion” only to find the stuff fits weird, makes me look silly or worse. I have however scored some major finds that I still have today, like my sequin sweater collection and several slouchy boots I still love. Some people however just have major skill, whether they get lucky, get up earlier than everyone else or just see things people don’t, here are a few of them!

A UK brand, Sintar just recently started carrying women’s wear and has a new collection of menswear featuring designs, printing style and theming that sets them apart from other street style brands.
Sinstar’s newest collection encompasses several themes, featuring text and images that express the beauty of life, love, sin and the human form. Sometimes expressive, lovely or just plain fashionable, their newest collection goes beyond printed images on tees and delves into the world of street fashion, original, unique and made for individuals.

In anticipation of their new line, which came out today (April 2nd) live on their website, we asked for an interview with the designers, artist and musicians, Ryan and Sam at SinStar Clothing:

SFW: How long have you had a clothing label?

Sinstar: We have owned and ran SinStar for almost two years now.

SFW: Did it start with design career or did you/all know that you wanted to get into clothing?

Sinstar: Ryan had been studying music and I had been studying animation at uni! We then formed a band and whilst on tour realised that we were both really good graphic designers. We started to design and then come up witt the idea.

SFW: Where do you get your design ideas and inspiration?

Sinstar: I suppose its all from our background of the band and touring the whole rock culture etc! We do a lot of photography and experiment with design which always comes up with new stuff and design ideas.

SFW: What piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to start a label?

Sinstar: I would say just go get stuck in and make some decisions and make some mistakes. You only learn from them and that exactly what we did. We didn’t have a clue about clothing when we started but we’ve worked our way up and learnt along the way.

SFW: What is the most difficult aspect of running your own label?

Sinstar: I would say getting products manufactured on time and getting them right in production. When you work hard on a garment and the tinniest mistake in production can ruin it for you.

SFW: How would you define the style of your brand?

Sinstar: I would say we are rock inspired brand with trashed clothes, muted colours and unique ideas.

SFW: If were to picture a room full of people wearing your clothes, what/where would the room be?

Sinstar: I would say in a wicked club somewhere with live music and beer and whiskey. lol! Something like that!

SFW: What are some of your favorite brands/labels?

Sinstar: No tomorrow – honour over glory – Drop Dead theirs so many!

SFW: Thanks Guys!

Sinstar will be a big part of my summer travel wardrobe this summer, with my motorcycle back on the road, my new pleather biker jacket, Harley Davidson boots and Sinstar, my 2012 look will definitely be sinful and stylish biker chick. If it wasn’t for SinStar Clothing, I’m pretty sure I’d just be wearing plain black tops and t-shirt dresses. They completely fit me. When I get some of Sinstar’s amazing stuff in the mail, there will be a photo shoot!

It’s more of a “Fashion Fact” than a “Fashion Feeling”, that sheer dresses, tops and skirts are really popular this spring. Light colors, prints, completely or partially see through – sheer is it.
Sheer tops have always been easy to find vintage though if you look at thrift stores, it seems they are often damaged or stained. In high school, I used to give a few sheer tops a go, wearing them with my leather biker jacket and mohawk. It made for a pretty interesting look that I think would actually work quite well if done right, and maybe this spring is the time to pull them out of the closet.
Possibly inspired by a sudden and warm spring for many places, sheer is great for a sexy yet mature look that can be accessorized to take on a myriad of directions, from ultra feminine to tough and untouchable.

French designer Dzmitry Samal has created a simple yet futuristic design for sunglasses, the pixel. Retro and futuristic is what most people are saying about the design, confusing to think about the two being one in the same but somehow Samal managed it. It almost seems silly that no one has come up with pixel frame glasses before and at the price these things run, it wont be long before knockoffs are all over the planet.
The explanation for the price of these sunglasses, dark lenses or clear ones, is the quality of the lens themselves. The glasses are made entirely in France in the traditional way from acetate where they use only Christian Dalloz Sunoptics (with 100% UV protection). This won’t mean a whole lot to some of us who just want the shape of the frame in our hands for under 126,00€. The best styles of the bunch run from 298€ to 350€ which pains me to think about spending on sunglasses but many of you will probably be willing to dish it our for an original and authentic pair of Dzmitry Samal pixel glasses. I however will wait till this summer when we will no doubt see them wherever we would usually see shutter, blinder and heart shaped sunglasses. One thing you can always bet on it knockoffs!

New and old styles are out this Spring, from traditional streetwear to the timlessly functional. There is no expirey date for Adidas Classics or hoodies and there never will be, but every year, designers are put to the test to make the old come alive.

Several companies have taken on a new market, targeting streetwear and urban style, creating new classics and staples for everyone wardrobe. For men, Carhartt Jeans are a new brand taking on the street, modernizing and streamlining. A company formerly known for making only work wear, Carhartt has been slowly transitioning into more fashionable and casual options for men. In the 90s, hardcore kids started wearing Carhartt work pants on a daily basis but the pants were heavy, thick, unyielding and hard to break in, no longer an issue.

Carhartt is an old company offering new styles but their name and design will always go well with the classics. Adidas classics have always been a favorite of mine for men and women and make great casual shoes, and can double as a statement about your great classic taste. Likewise, Shoes by Lacoste has a huge variety that holds true to classic Lacoste styles, Maybe not as old as Classic Adidas but not everyone likes the 70s era of street shoes. Anytime you buy sneakers online, you have to be wary of the size and return policy. I would much rather buy online than spent time at a mall or fighting over popular styles in my size so try and get an idea how each brand fits your feet before ordering. If you’ve ever ordered the wrong size, you know what a pain returns can be.. at least the wait.

Many streetwear and lifestyle brands come out with the same types of clothes every year, but with new art, patterns and logos. Inspired by either current events , trends in design or just personal style, both men’s and women’s streetwear is often like a collectible piece in itself. This differentiates itself from typical casual clothing because of its originality and fashion mortality. “There will never be another piece like this” you can say, and be right. After each seasons line is out, that is in most cases the last printing and the company will move on to their next inspired collection – whereas Adidas, Carhartt and Locoste, as classics can be expected to stay relatively the same with the occasional “Adidas Originals” type collection, new technologies added to sports shoes or a slow evolution from one style to the next. That’s why so many companies become known as being the staple of an outfit, something you love for its comfort and familiarity, while accessorizing it with streetwear companies that give your overall ensemble an originality.

Women’s streetwear is generally the same except that women generally have a larger variety of options, like skirts and dresses of different cuts and lengths, Shorts for women come in many more lengths and colors as well, while men’s shorts generally stay around board short length unless they’re going jogging. So it’s no wonder than women’s street fashion is the real focus of most websites. Men have hoodies, tees, shirts, shorts and pants and women have about 50 other things we’ve never heard of.

Shoes as well come in a much larger variety than mens but luckily for me, where I shop has about the largest selection for both men and women, in classic brands and streetstyle brands to make buying stuff I like easy without even leaving the house with my shop-happy girlfriend. If you like classics, variety, originality and great brands (and new ones) – Check out Def-Shop

I’ve never think of Japan when I think of black leather and denim but here it is! A new trend in Tokyo seems to be a bit of Americana. Maybe not as much as in the 80s when a pair of Levis 501′s would go for hundreds on any given day or when one of the “coolest” things ever were tees and sweatshirts with Micky or Minnie Mouse on them.
This might be a step in the right direction though, price and taste wise, not that I don’t love 80s Japanese style of course.

When I discovered Out of Print Clothing, I just about blew my paycheck…but, I do have some restraint. I did however immediately order two items representing two of my favorite books of all time (Animal Farm and The Outsiders) and added another several to my pinterest collections for later drooling and summer wardrobe buys.

Almost all of us have read several of ”the classics” (at least in the U.S), even if they were forced onto us by our schools or parents and don’t remember them all, we did read them. The U.S. public education might be incredibly terrible in most states but many of the individual teachers actually care about education and exposing kids to new and exciting ideas from classic books. I managed to avoid many of these by moving around so much as a kid. A simple “I read that at my last school” would get me out of almost any book assignment and I would get to choose my own books from the library. The first time I allowed a teacher to recommend a book to me, it was Fahrenheit 451. I read the back of the book before I pulled out my best excuse and found that I actually wanted to read it. From then on my idea of what the school system was trying to do to me (turn me into main-stream zombie yuppie scum I thought – yes I had a green mohawk and a pierced nose), became less of a war against the whole system and more of a treaty on an individual basis. I started to notice cool teachers who actually cared and I started to consider that “the classics” are not necessarily “tools of the system to pacify my rebellious brain”.

In fact, “The Classics” are freakin’ awesome. They teach us great lessons about life, individuality, rebellion, coming of age, or journeys of mind, body and spirit. After avoiding so many of them for so long, I now find myself downloading them to my Kindle and playing catch-up. Out of Print Clothing, has not just “the classics and greats” of literature in t-shirt form, but also iphone covers, tote bags, journals and more to please or encourage any book lover or future book lover (kids clothes too!).

You know the saying, “Never judge a book by its cover?”, well it’s true, but so many great classics had amazing covers, (take from that what you will) and now you can wear them, and people will be able to judge from your cover, that you love awesome books.

I was punk all through highschool, starting with my love for the music and my crush on a 21 year old punk friend of my borthers. I had a mohawk from age 15 to 18, green or red hair, a nose ring, a leather jacket with spikes, steel toed boots, cat eye makeup and dark sunglasses on all the time, – but I didn’t have any punk friends, I didn’t shop at Hot Topic, and I made most of my clothes myself from whatever I could find. My favorite thing to do was take old oversize tees and cut them into crop sleeveless tees, then wear them over long sleeve tees with holes cut for my thumbs. I was a poor, parentless teen, living on friend’s couches for much of highschool but I never did drugs, rarely drank and always went to school. I had great grades and my teachers loved me for not dropping out so they let me do anything I wanted, and I never really lost my style in the process. So although stereotypes can sometimes be true, punk is a style I find only given a bad reputation by idiots who think of it a solely a fashion style with some mandatory “bad boy/girl lifestyle” to match – like they’re putting on a costume and playing a part rather than being themselves and showing how they feel through their style. So it’s no wonder that as some of us punks have grown up, we have kept our fashion style because many of us still feel the same way we did when we started dressing that way. Some of us have done better than others, some of us had to stop dressing that way for jobs, but we will always love the music we loved as teens and be punks inside no matter what we wear. How many “trends” can you say that about.

Labor Division is definitely a clothing company designed for the future.
An eco-conscious company with economic etchics? I must be dreaming right?

Labor Division works exclusively with small domestic factories that have a long history of craftsmanship and integrity. “Our manufacturers share the typically Italian tradition of respecting the material and working with their hands. The environment in which our products are made is intimate, hands-on and personal.”

An Italian brand, Labor Division makes handmade quality clothing the way most things used to be made, by hand and of the highest quality possible by skilled individuals. Not that the Industrial Age didn’t change the world, create jobs and ultimately create capitalism… which most people see as positive things but I’m a traditionalist when it comes to quality and craftsmanship, both of which are major priorities for me.

Check out Labor Division’s gorgeous new Fall 2012 collection and their practically edible lookbook photos, set in what looks to me like home here in the Rocky Mountains. A man and his ax, hot cup of coffee, a good book and a walk in the woods. If my boyfriend would let me dress him, this would be his entire wardrobe since that’s otherwise him in the photos – beard, ax, book and all. Sigh..dream with me..
