Constantina, Interesting Business Model via Australia

I don’t write about hot women’s clothing very often. Mostly because I’m just not all that into it but Constantina struck me as crossing the line from snobby high fashion into the realms of the fashion conscious shopper – bother environmentally and style wise, and whether they intended to or not.
Their designs span from fun and funky to the kinds of dresses you see in 90′s rich-bitch movies – minus the shoulder pads. Last night I watched A Shrimp on the Barbie with Cheech Marin (don’t laugh, it’s actually a really great movie) and not only was one of my favorite companies, Stussy, on the hat, shirt and jacket of Cheech throughout the entire film but his co-star Emma Samms wore a constant supply of rich-bitch dresses and mini jackets. One thing I always love about 80s and 90s movies is the fashion and I often wonder why people don’t still dress like that (although they may in rich circles, I wouldn’t know).
It just so happens to be that Constantina, being from Australia,  shows much of the same fashion gusto seen in A Shrimp on the Barbie by complete coincidence I’m sure. Slinky tight dresses, jumpsuits, ripped tees, animal prints and priceless body flattering fits, especially around the shoulders and waist.

What makes the company cross the line from posh cleb obsessed fashion is
1.They’re Australian
2. They don’t sell their items in retail stores, only online and at home showings. In the true style of Avon and Cutco Knives, they come door to door to sell you rockin fashion. Who else does that?
3. Because they don’t sell in retail stores they avoid mass producing their products – prices stay low and pieces stay somewhat exclusive.
4. They have names for their collections like “Safari nights” , “Tribal Resort”, “Native Retreat” and “Sunset Camouflage”  - slightly humorous in the best style – the completely serious style.

Here’s a few of the styles I like and are especially  reminiscent of 90′s rich bitch movies:

Like I said, you wont be finding them in retail stores and assuming most of you dont live in Australia, you wont be getting a home visit from these styles anytime soon. Maybe they’ll be shipping internationally soon but for now you can check out their styles, copy them, be jealous or pine for them here.  http://www.constantina.com.au

For the most part I like them as an interesting business model. A punky designer keeping it real school Avon style (you know at least half of your moms sold avon).

Spring 2010 Carrot Clothing, Ludo Tee, Nature's Revenge & Underdogs tee

Carrot Clothing’s spring line is a great mix of skate, street and the middle finger. Each design true to the nature of the tee and even truer to the nature of the street. In addition to their main Spring 2010 line they also choose to go a direction reminiscent of the founder himself and his experiences, both as an artist and as a person.

The first thing that made this company particularly interesting was its back story. The founder and designer, Alex Gligorich, began making shirts for friends and family in a politically torn Syria in the 90′s. His anti-war message, although courageous, landed him in jail and at the mercy of unforgiving local authorities for spreading alleged “terrorist” policies. He has since joined forces with other people of the same mindset, from street artists to skateboarders to establish Carrot Clothing, a brand whose very essence is based upon the underdog, family relationships between art, skate and street communities. The Spring 2010 line, called Fuck War, is exactly how it sounds, ballsy, outspoken and real. Featuring mens hoodies, t-shirts, button-up shirts and even a varsity jacket, the line represents an in your face attitude sorely needed by any fashion conscious war protester. Many people underestimate the power of fashion to persuade and express things as serious as political opinion. If making t-shirts can get you thrown in jail, that alone is proof that the message was seen, heard and affected people. Heres your chance to do the same!
