When you think of a person that enjoys literature, vintage art, coffee shops, alternative clothing, rocks aman-bun/beard combo, is covered with tattoos, and only consumes organically grown products, what is the first thought that pops in your head? “Oh great, that guy must be another one of those hipsters”, you might think. But, what is a hipster?
Decades ago, the term for hipster meant something totally different than it does now. As defined by early hipster guru, Norman Mailer, becoming a hipster is “to divorce oneself from society, to exist without roots, to set out on that uncharted journey into the rebellious imperatives of the self.” The technical term for a hipster nowadays is someone that follows the latest trends and fashion, especially those regarded as being outside of the cultural norm. Although the overall definition has changed over the years, it comes as no surprise that people still want to break social conformities and push limits. This time around, it involves man-buns and skin-tight jeans instead.
That Look Is So Last Season
Best described by Douglass Haddow, published journalist and blogger, he states that the new generation of hipsters have no loyalty towards any particular trend and are unlikely to create anything new regarding fashion: “Hipsterdom is the first ‘counterculture’ to be born under the advertising industry’s microscope, leaving it open to constant manipulation but also forcing its participants to continually shift their interests and affiliations…But the moment a trend, band, sound, style, or feeling gains too much exposure, it is suddenly looked upon with disdain.” This new trend of rebels has taken over in the past few years and has now become the “norm” which means that soon these “hipsters” will be looking for a new trend to follow. But, what might this trend be?
I Like Jazz, but I’m Not a Hipster
If you truly enjoy living an organic lifestyle, listening to jazz, enjoying a dark beer at local bars, and listening to poetry, that doesn’t automatically put you into the new hipster category; it just makes you someone that enjoys a different type of creative lifestyle. But, if you’re sporting overly big “nerdy” glasses, wearing skinny jeans, rocking a man-bun, boasting about your beard and body full of tattoos while explaining why your political opinions are obsolete to the rest of the world, you are “totes” part of this new category of hipsters.

Strive for Success
We’ve all heard our parents and even grandparents tell us to strive for success and that “the early bird catches the worm” when they want us to take that new promotion or take advantage of a good opportunity before someone else will. But, why not think this way about the way you dress? Unless you plan on having a career as a hipster for the rest of your life, you will have to start thinking of your future life goals now. Your fashion choices are a complete representation of what you want the world to see you as, so why not catch the worm before the other birds do? When striving for success, people should make every effort to dress more elegantly. So, overcome this new social norm and start your own trend by dressing more gracefully and preferably wearing quality custom suits tailored to compliment your character. Now, I’m not telling you that you have to completely change your entire look, but it should get an upgrade to look more polished and sophisticated.
Unless you have a casual dress code at work, most places require you to dress a little (or a lot) more professional than wearing your favorite black boots, cut up jeans, plaid t-shirt, and your beloved “whatevs” beanie. Since being a hipster is becoming redundant nowadays, changing your wardrobe to be more elegant is something that should be mandatory for all young professionals, especially since the millennial generation is reaching its peak ages for career development. And, with online websites dedicated to making you look your best, finding affordable and quality custom suits will never be an issue.
