Paris Fashion Week 2013 Picks – Where Trends and Runway Nonsese Meet

I’m not a fan of big name runway fashion shows, for many many reasons, two of the biggest being the absurd costs the average item from said designers, and second, the unwearable nature of half the items on parade. Of course this does not go for all runway fashion. Most small designers do runway shows from time to time and it’s a sign of growth and professionalism, but I still have a hard time accepting the big name charades put on every year at fashion weeks around the world.

Even with all the absurdity going on, there are still many benefits for the rest of us coming out of these big name shows. Predicted trends are expressed by the designers in however they see fit, whether its a man sized fox head, a dress that looks like shredded plastic garbage bags or something I would totally wear (but not pay for), it’s all in there somewhere, telling us boisterously “This is what is to come in fashion..”.

They don’t necessarily “predict” anything, they make it happen. Designers pick up on little hints from society and things they like catch their eye and flat out tell you “everyone will so000 wear this in 2013”.

Although street fashion, to me, is meant to defy this system of fashion sheep herding, it undoubtedly and subconsciously absorbs trends from the “high street” – just as pop culture leaks into each and every one of our brains, till the day you catch yourself singing “Oppa Gangnam Style”, having only heard the song once by accident.

I chose some of my favorites from the Paris Fashion Week 2013 spectacle, seeing in many of them what I see in my own evolving style – you may have to squint, but there are some interesting things going on here in every case.

There’s no denying that whether you love them or hate them, big name runway trends have big influence. Everyone that saw and will see pieces like the above might just subconsciously seek them out. And that boys and girls, is where trends come from.
