For a while when I was about 9, I thought I wanted to be a fashion designer. I made a dress out of a piece of black fabric… and by “make a dress” I mean, I wrapped a piece of fabric around myself and pinned it under my armpit with a safety pin. I thought I had made a cocktail dress. I went outside to show my friends, who were all very impressed… being as we were 9 years old. However it wasn’t 5 minutes before the thing came unpinned and I was running back home holding it in place. That was the last time I tried my hand at fashion design. I wish I’d known a fix for that one. The Best Tips for fashion come from experts and those who’ve experienced wardrobe tragedies.
I don’t even wear many dressy clothes but I do know stains. My methods usually include handsoap and water in the nearest bathroom so I’ve already learned a lot from these personal stylists, especially when it comes to the boyfriend’s dress shirts.
Here’s some methods I’ve found useful:

For cleaning shoes, I typically use a little Oxyclean and a toothbrush. I’ve gotten out car oil stains, red coctail stains and countless unidentified city walking stains from white sneakers and light dress shoes with ease. For me what works best is circular motions with the brush and sometimes multiple attempts. To make things quicker and really buff things out, consider a cordless drill and some buffing attachments, they’re great for everything from cars to shoes!
For removing food coloring and hair dye stains from Cotton and Linen:
- Soak in a solution of 1 quart warm water, 1/2 teaspoon dishwashing detergent, and 1 tablespoon ammonia for 30 minutes.*Rinse with water.
- Apply rubbing alcohol and tamp (the method of bringing a brush down with light strokes on stained durable fabrics and materials) or scrape (the method of using a scraping tool to gently lift off excess solid or caked-on stains).
- Keep the stain moist with alcohol and blot occasionally.
- Continue as long as stain is being removed.
- Flush with water and allow to dry.
- Launder as soon as possible.
To eliminate the stale smell in handwashables (I hate hand washing):
- Soak them in 4 tablespoons baking soda and a quart of water.
- Rinse well.
- Squeeze out the solution.
- Air dry.
Prevent nylon items from yellowing by adding baking soda to both the wash and rinse water and yellowed linens can be brightened by adding 4 tablespoons baking soda to the wash water.
