Maui has a whole host of attractions beautiful beaches, stunning weather and a general relaxed vibe. Whether you plan to stay in a hotel or one of the luxurious maui beachfront rentals you’ll want to get out and about so you can see the area. But what are the best things to see and do in Maui? Read on for more information:
The Road to Hana
One of the best things to do in Maui is to spend some time on the road to Hana. This road offers one of Maui’s best views and an experience you’ll never forget. The road itself is very scenic and it makes its way through the rainforest, past some magnificent waterfalls and close to the sea. Please note that the road to Hana which is also known as Highway 360 is not always that easy to drive on, there are a few sharp turns so you will need to be careful. You may also want to make sure that you have enough gas for the journey as you won’t be able to ‘Fill her up’ until you reach Hana.
There are a lot of beautiful places for you to stop, allowing you to admire the view and of course, take a few photographs. Stop as often as you can and you’ll enjoy the journey more, remember, there’s no rush to get to Hana, the road is the destination so take your time and you’ll have a lot of fun. The road can get quite busy at times so you will have to drive carefully and respect the rules of the road. If you do not wish to drive along this often hair-raising road then you may want to join one of the local tours that see someone else trying to navigate the road while you sit back and relax.
Kaanapali Beach
Found at Kaanapali Parkway, Lahaina, Kaanapali Beach is one of Maui’s most popular beaches. With more than 3 miles of coastline, the beach is simply stunning and looks like a beach you’d find on a desert island. While this beach is nothing short of beautiful when it gets crowded it’s not as easy to enjoy it. Therefore, you may wish to head to the beach early in the morning before everyone else does.
If you like to enjoy a paddle in the water it would be wise to stay close to the shore as the currents can be very strong at times. Dip your toes in the sea as you walk along the beach and make your way to one of the local cafés or restaurants for a bite to eat. Kaanapali Beach is stunning and is worth visiting at least once.
Iao Valley State Park
Located at the end of Iao Valley Road, Wailuku, the Iao Valley State Park is the ideal place to visit if you would like to get away from the beach. Spanning more than 4,000 acres, this park is a must-visit destination. Make your way to the park and head on out to the Iao Needle which is also known as ‘Kukaemoku’ that was formed entirely by erosion and looks like a very small but steep mountain.
While the park is nothing short of beautiful, it is also home to a bit of history. In 1790 Maui’s tribal army battled with King Kamehameha’s soldiers during the battle of Kepaniwai and lost. After his win, the king united the Hawaiian archipelago and changed the history of the local area. With many hiking trails, a botanical garden and some fascinating rock formations Iao Valley State Park is worth visiting. At the time of writing entry was $5 per vehicle and tickets are available at the State Park. Take a picnic with you and enjoy your time at this remarkable State Park.
Old Lahaina Luau
If you are about to visit Maui for the very first time you may want to head to the Old Lahaina Luau as it’s a great introduction to Hawaiian culture. Taking place at 1287 Front Street, Lahaina, the Luau is a lot of fun and helps to represent those who are happy to stick to the traditional Hawaiian way of living.
When you watch the Luau you’ll see some award-winning dancing and you’ll also have the chance to enjoy some local dishes too. Watch some of the performers do some fire dancing while they hula and enjoy 2 hours of non-stop entertainment. At the time of writing entry was approximately $120 per adult and $80 per child and while this may seem quite expensive it is well worth every penny. If you would like a taste of traditional Hawaiian culture you need to devote one evening to the Luau.
There is a lot to see and do in Maui, but after a bit of research, we think that the above 4 activities are some of the very best that Maui has to offer. Make your way to the road to Hana and gaze at the incredible view. Spend some time at Kaanapali Beach, one of the most popular beaches in the area. Take a picnic with you and enjoy the Hawaiian sun as you find a spot to sit back, relax, and listen to the waves crash against the sand. Don’t forget to visit the amazing Iao Valley State Park that has a lot more to it than meets the eye, and finally, see the old Lahaina Luau and learn more about Hawaiian culture.
